Birth to 3 Development Handouts
All kids develop on their own timeline. Instead of focusing on what skills your child is lacking celebrate all of the awesome things they are doing!! Also don't get hung up on the ages, just find where your sweet kid is at and then watch for ways to help them wherever they are in their development. Should you have any concerns or questions ask your pediatrician, they are experts!
Birth to 6 Months:
From day 1 babies are ready to learn and grow. Hold your baby, sing to him, talk to him, and cuddle him. Give your baby time to rest each day (back is best!). When your baby is awake and alert get him on his tummy. One Physical Therapist I worked with had the slogan -back to sleep and tummy for play!

6 Months to 9 Months:
I call these the "Golden Baby" months--your baby will learn to sit up and will start exploring toys more. Everything will start to go in his mouth. Your baby might even start to scoot and crawl around on his own during these months. Your baby will also start making more sounds--keep talking, keep reading, and keep exploring!

9 Months to 1 Year:
Busy, busy baby has arrived! Your baby will be actively exploring his environment, and everything he finds may end up in his mouth. If you haven't already, be sure to baby-proof your house now. You baby will start imitating actions or sounds, he may even have a few words by his first birthday!

1 Year to 18 Months:
Happy Birthday Baby! These are exciting months, celebrate as your baby starts taking off with his walking and first words. Your baby will watch your mouth, your hands, and your eyes very intently. He will start using his own words and sounds (animal sounds are awesome for this age) and even follow some simple directions.

18 Months to 2 Years:
Run! Climb! Play! Your baby is now a toddler, he will love playing at the kiddie park. He is learning to communicate using words (his favorite might be "no"!). He might start exploring limits and testing your patience. This is how he learns; be consistent, give him lots of choices, and praise his good attempts.

2 Years to 30 Months:
Look what he can do now! Your toddler is just the right age to enjoy drawing, coloring, stringing large beads, and other fine motor activities. He can also run, jump, and use utensils. You little guy will be putting words together into phrases and sentences...it's ok if only you can understand it all for now!

Your toddler can now throw and kick a ball. He is learning to take turns and help with simple chores. Your toddler will love routines and might be upset when his day gets changed suddenly. Your toddler should be talking in longer phrases and you should understand almost everything he says.
